Militairen vallen niet onder het Klimaatverdrag van Parijs en hebben dus ook geen verplichting om hun uitstoot van broeikasgas te verminderen. Terwijl alleen al de uitstoot van het Pentagon groter is dan die van een middelgroot land als Zweden. Sommige politici beweren dat gevechtsvliegtuigen zoals de F-35 (ook bekend als JSF) rond 2035 voor de helft emissievrij zullen zijn. De technische mogelijkheden ontbreken vooralsnog. De enige zinnige manier om militaire emissies te verkleinen is de krijgsmacht te verkleinen.
Tijdens de klimaattop in Glasgow wordt door vredesgroepen op allerlei aandacht gevraagd voor de emissies van de krijgsmacht.
Op de foto: XR Peace en Trident Ploughshares bezoeken wapenbedrijven en militaire locaties in de omgeving van Glasgow, om te eisen dat militaire emissies worden meegenomen in klimaatbeleid. De vredesactivisten gaan langs BAE Systems, Babcock, Lockheed Martin, Thales, Clyde Space, QinetiQ, Ministrie van Defensie, Digital Barriers, en het wervingsburo van de krijgsmacht. Online / Glasgow, Arctic BaseCamp Tent (Federated Hermes Fringe Site): Scientists will launch a new website dedicated to showcasing the dire state of military greenhouse gas emissions reporting to the UNFCCC. A new website developed by the Conflict and Environment Observatory and Concrete Impacts (Lancaster & Durham Universities) – www.militaryemissions.org – will bring these voluntary reports into one place for the first time, allowing visitors to see what their countries do, and do not report, and just how big the military emissions gap is.
